I sent out my first book, unagented, and received wonderfully encouraging rejection letters (a great oxymoron, I think), many of which talked about "this crowded market place." Then I wrote Where's Mommy Now?. After a brief, tantalizing and ultimately frustrating flirtation with one agent (when we met, he told me how much he and his reader adored the book; the next morning he wasn't so sure...), I found another agent, who sold the mystery. After Where's Mommy? was published, an editor from Avon (Avon calling?) phoned to tell me she loved the book, and bought my first book.
Where's Mommy Now? won the Anthony for Best Paperback Original. And I've been killing ever since.
